Abstract

This study aims to describe the history of the emergence of the Ottoman Empire, which conquered Eastern European countries and Arab nations in Asia and North Africa from the 13th to the 19th century. The empire made Constantinople its capital, renaming it Istanbul, meaning "City of Islam." The Ottoman Empire displayed its power through its military forces, and the Ottomans lived amidst military conflicts, with limited attention to intellectual, scientific, and literary developments. The era of the Ottoman Empire was a period of decline for Islamic civilization in general, and particularly for the Arabic language and its literature. The intellectual and literary life of Islamic civilization in the Arab world weakened in the 15th century, further deteriorating after the Ottoman conquest. The use of the Arabic language became confined to religious matters and daily transactions, although Arabic continued to be taught and learned in schools and universities.
