Abstract

This study aims to examine the religious understanding of Sheikh Khatib Muhammad Ali Padang through the moderate approach advocated by Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qardhawi. Sheikh Khatib Muhammad Ali Padang contributed to the richness of Islamic scholarship in Indonesia, particularly in the Minangkabau region in the early 20th century. The research method used in this study is the historical research method. The author first searched for various sources related to the research. The next step was to critically analyze these sources in order to draw conclusions in the form of the author’s interpretation, after which the paper was written. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that Sheikh Khatib Muhammad Ali Padang was an elder scholar who held moderate (wasatiyyah) views; although he belonged to the group of elder scholars, he accepted the ideas of the younger generation as well as those of the older generation. He occupies a middle ground between the ideas of the older and younger generations, as evidenced by the following manifestations of his moderation: 1. Openness toward modernist-reformist organizations such as SI (Syarikat Islam); 2. A balance between tradition and renewal; 3. The establishment of the Irsyadiyah Madrasah.
