As a maritime region with a long history of trade and migration, Bangka Belitung served as a meeting ground between coastal communities (Sea People) and agrarian communities (Land People). This study employs a historical and anthropological approach by examining colonial sources, local archives, and ethnographic records. The findings reveal that interactions between these two groups gave rise to processes of cultural acculturation, socioeconomic change, and the formation of a distinctive local identity. The roles of both groups in the region’s historical trajectory also reveal the dynamics of adaptation to colonialism and modernity in the maritime regions of the Indonesian archipelago.
2026-06-30T00:00:00+07:00 Copyright (c) 2026 Endang Rochmiatun Rochmi https://rjfahuinib.org/index.php/khazanah/article/view/2447 CONSTRUCTION OF RAIN-CALLING RITUALS: A CASE STUDY OF THE OJHUNG TRADITION IN BATUPUTIH DAYA, MADURA 2026-06-12T03:53:35+07:00 Moh Rodi rodimuhammads50@gmail.com Raafi Herdiansyah Putra raafi.akademik@gmail.com Andri Rosadi andri.rosadi@uin-suka.ac.id
The Ojhung tradition is a fighting art performed by two men in Batuputih using a whip in an open arena. In practice, this fighting art then transformed into a rain-calling ritual. This study aims to reveal the transformation of Ojhung from a fighting art into a rain-calling ritual, along with the meaning contain in it. This study employs a qualitative approach. The data will be analyzed using Clifford Geertz's interpretive theory. The results of the study indicate that Ojhung is a fighting art for Sumenep soldier training in the 12th century, led by the Singasari kingdom's dignitaries who were in Sumenep. When the Singasari dignitaries left Sumenep, Ojhung continued and developed into a rain-summoning ritual by the local people. In the process of interpretation of meaning, several elements are used, such as whips, music, offerings, time and place that represent their own symbolic meanings.
2026-06-30T00:00:00+07:00 Copyright (c) 2026 moh Moh rodi
