Abstract
This research is motivated by the critical need to preserve local traditions amid modern developments affecting community life. The Ngatok behou sulung pase tradition of the Hamparan Rawang community involves delivering rice or basic food items to family members, tengganai (extended family elders), and traditional leaders ahead of Ramadan as a form of friendship (silaturahmi), respect, and sociocultural reinforcement. This study aims to analyze the community's literacy capabilities regarding access, evaluation, and application of the Ngatok behou sulung pase tradition. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were gathered through observation, interviews, and documentation, with subjects selected via purposive sampling and analysed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the community's ability to access literacy—specifically in defining the tradition's needs—is categorised as good, as most residents are familiar with the tradition, albeit primarily on a general level rather than a deep understanding of its values and meanings. Evaluation literacy is also rated good, with community members actively assessing and reviewing acquired information. Furthermore, literacy usage is categorised as moderately good, as residents effectively communicate and disseminate information regarding the tradition. Ultimately, this study underscores that ancestral traditions must be continuously preserved to maintain cultural identity in modern times.
