Therefore, this short story needs to be studied with an implicature perspective to describe the forms of implicature and its form to reveal the implied things represented. This study uses a qualitative design. Data are taken from the lingual features of the conversations between characters in the story Nawādir Juha li al-Athfāl by Syauqi Hasan. The data collection technique used involves careful reading and recording of the short story Nawādir Juha li al-Athfāl that contains indications of implicature. The data analysis technique is the matching method by referring to Paul Grice's implicature theory. The results of the study show that conventional and conversational forms of implicature are found that represent meanings that are relevant to the social and cultural values of the general public. The functions of the implicature forms found include 7 assertive functions, 4 expressive functions of insinuation, 2 directive functions of command, and 1 directive function of requesting help, which tend to represent culture and tradition in the lives of the general public. The dominance of these functional findings strengthens the research implication that implicature can help reveal meanings that tend to have been stated, but are still implicit.
Shela Karniati, Yufni Faisol, Awliya Rahmi Copyright (c) 2025 Shela Karniati, Yufni Faisol, Awliya Rahmi https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 https://rjfahuinib.org/index.php/Ukazh/article/view/1901 Wed, 31 Dec 2025 00:00:00 +0700 The Reality Behind the Nigerian Civil War in the Novel ‘Amāliqah al-Syamāl: A Sociological Approach to the Work of Najib Kailani https://rjfahuinib.org/index.php/Ukazh/article/view/2549
This study examines the reality of the civil war between the three major ethnic groups in Nigeria. The war occurred due to a series of prolonged conflicts since Nigeria gained independence from Britain. The issues addressed in this study concern the portrayal of Nigerian society during the civil war in the novel ‘Amāliqah al-Syamāl, the aspects documented by Najib Kailani, and the real-life impact of the civil war. The aim of this research is to assess the representation of the events in the novel ‘Amāliqah al-Syamāl in reflecting the historical events of the past. The method employed in this study is a qualitative descriptive method, referring to the sociological approach to literature from the perspectives of René Wellek and Austin Warren. The findings of this study indicate that ‘Amāliqah al-Syamāl is a novel that can serve as a reflection of the social life of Nigerian society during the civil war. Through the text analysis of the novel, various conflicts that led to the outbreak of the war are revealed. Although not all events are presented by Najib Kailani, significant aspects such as the leaders, the five key events that triggered the war, and several cultural elements of Nigerian society are depicted in the novel. Similarly, the impact of the civil war, which claimed the lives of millions of civilians, is presented concisely and engagingly.
Feby Aulia Putri Dalimunte, Asrina, Ahmad Busyrowi Copyright (c) 2025 Feby Aulia Putri Dalimunte, Asrina, Ahmad Busyrowi https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 https://rjfahuinib.org/index.php/Ukazh/article/view/2549 Wed, 31 Dec 2025 00:00:00 +0700 How Do Gendered Power Relations Produce the Objectification of Women in Al-Ḥubb fī Zamān al-Nafṭ? A Sara Mills Critical Discourse Analysis https://rjfahuinib.org/index.php/Ukazh/article/view/2557
This study investigates the discursive construction of gender in Nawal El-Sa’dāwī’s Al-Ḥubb fī Zamān al-Nafṭ using Sara Mills’ Critical Discourse Analysis. It examines how women are positioned as subjects and objects in the narrative and how such positioning reproduces patriarchal power relations. Using a qualitative critical approach, the data consist of narrative passages and dialogues from the original Arabic text collected through close reading. The analysis follows Miles and Huberman’s framework, focusing on subject–object positioning and reader alignment in Sara Mills’ model. The findings indicate that women are predominantly constructed as objects of narration, while their subjectivity remains limited and situational. Although female characters occasionally express awareness of oppression, this awareness does not develop into sustained narrative agency. Consequently, women’s resistance is framed as reflective rather than transformative. The study also identifies symbolic violence through linguistic strategies that normalize restrictions on women’s mobility, bodies, and socio-economic opportunities. Furthermore, the narrative positions readers to empathize with women’s suffering while accepting gender inequality as a naturalized social condition. This study contributes to feminist literary criticism and critical linguistics by showing that gender inequality operates not only thematically but also through discursive mechanisms embedded in language and narrative structure within Arabic literary contexts and feminist ideological reproduction processes.
Olivia Nurda Effendi, Hetti Waluati Triana, Reflinaldi Copyright (c) 2025 Olivia Nurda Effendi, Hetti Waluati Triana, Reflinaldi https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 https://rjfahuinib.org/index.php/Ukazh/article/view/2557 Wed, 31 Dec 2025 00:00:00 +0700 War Narratives in Metaphorical Framing: An Analysis of Connotative Meanings in CNN Arabic News Headlines on the Russia–Ukraine Conflict https://rjfahuinib.org/index.php/Ukazh/article/view/2613
This study aims to understand the meanings of words and phrases that carry connotative meanings and to identify the types of words or phrases used in CNN Arabic news headlines about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The research method is qualitative with a descriptive-analytical approach. The data for this study includes all news headlines related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict under the world news section on the CNN Arabic website. The data source is the CNN Arabic website. The theory used for data analysis is the theory of denotative and connotative meanings proposed by Ahmad Mukhtar Umar in his book ‘Ilmu al-Dilalah’. The results of the study show that there are 33 CNN Arabic news headlines that contain connotative meanings. Among the 33 headlines, there are 22 types of word choices, phrases, and sentences used. 6 dictions contain metaphors of place names and geographical areas, 5 dictions contain metaphors of human body parts, 4 data metaphorical narratives containing expressive emotions, 4 data that figure situations in war, and 3 data that describe the form and condition of a character. This dominance emphasizes the media’s goal to attract public attention with concrete narratives that are in line with the implications of this study for public awareness of metaphorical meanings.
Siti Nur'aini, Tafiati, Melisa Rezi Copyright (c) 2025 Siti Nur'aini, Tafiati, Melisa Rezi https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 https://rjfahuinib.org/index.php/Ukazh/article/view/2613 Thu, 12 Feb 2026 00:00:00 +0700 Advertising Language as Negotiation of Global Brand Identity and Local Values: A Speech Act Analysis on Mcdonald’s Arabia’s Youtube Channel https://rjfahuinib.org/index.php/Ukazh/article/view/2626
Global advertising in the Middle East faces challenges in negotiating brand identity with the cultural and religious values of local communities. Although many studies have been conducted on McDonald’s marketing on social media, analysis of advertising language practices from a speech act perspective in the Arab context is still limited. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the use of speech acts in advertisements on McDonald’s Arabia’s YouTube channel as a persuasive strategy oriented towards Arab audiences. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with documentation techniques on selected advertisements from McDonald’s Arabia’s official YouTube channel. The data were analyzed using a speech act theory framework that includes the locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary levels. The results show that McDonald’s Arabia advertisements utilize locutionary speech acts to convey product information and social context, illocutionary speech acts, especially implicit assertive and directive ones, to emphasize halal identity and alignment with Arab culture, and perlocutionary speech acts to build emotional effects such as religious security, cultural closeness, and brand attachment. These findings confirm that advertising language functions as a medium for negotiating identity between global brands and local values, while also contributing to the development of pragmatic studies and discourse analysis of digital advertising in the Arab socio-cultural context.
Kenny Andika, Yasmadi, Delami Copyright (c) 2025 Kenny Andika, Yasmadi, Delami https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 https://rjfahuinib.org/index.php/Ukazh/article/view/2626 Thu, 12 Feb 2026 00:00:00 +0700
